"plain_text": "About Remote Desktop Services - Win32 apps\r\nBy GrantMeStrength\r\nArchived: 2026-04-05 13:43:44 UTC\r\nRemote Desktop Services (formerly known as Terminal Services) provides functionality similar to a terminal-based, centralized host, or mainframe, environment in which multiple terminals connect to a host computer. Each\r\nterminal provides a conduit for input and output between a user and the host computer. A user can log on at a\r\nterminal, and then run applications on the host computer, accessing files, databases, network resources, and so on.\r\nEach terminal session is independent, with the host operating system managing conflicts between multiple users\r\ncontending for shared resources.\r\nThe primary difference between Remote Desktop Services and the traditional mainframe environment is that the\r\ndumb terminals in a mainframe environment only provide character-based input and output. A Remote Desktop\r\nConnection (RDC) client or emulator provides a complete graphical user interface including a Windows operating\r\nsystem desktop and support for a variety of input devices, such as a keyboard and mouse.\r\nIn the Remote Desktop Services environment, an application runs entirely on the Remote Desktop Session Host\r\n(RD Session Host) server (formerly known as a terminal server). The RDC client performs no local processing of\r\napplication software. The server transmits the graphical user interface to the client. The client transmits the user's\r\ninput back to the server.\r\nFor more information, see the following topics.\r\nIn this section\r\nModify Device Redirection Default\r\nBecause Remote Desktop Gateway servers attempt to enforce secure device redirection policies before\r\npassing the client connection through to a Remote Desktop Session Host server, you may need to disable\r\nthis default in some cases.\r\nRemote Desktop Protocol\r\nThe Microsoft Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) provides remote display and input capabilities over\r\nnetwork connections for Windows-based applications running on a server.\r\nRemote Desktop Services API\r\nThe Remote Desktop Services API is primarily useful to client/server applications and applications for\r\nRemote Desktop Services administration.\r\nRemote Desktop Services management applications\r\nhttps://docs.microsoft.com/windows/win32/termserv/about-terminal-services\r\nPage 1 of 2\n\nDescribes the management applications that Remote Desktop Services supports.\r\nRemote Desktop Services programming guidelines\r\nTopics that provide guidelines for developing applications in a Remote Desktop Services environment.\r\nRemote Desktop Sessions\r\nBecause each logon to a Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) client receives a separate session ID, the user-experience is similar to being logged on to multiple computers at the same time; for example, an office\r\ncomputer and a home computer.\r\nRemote Desktop Web Connection\r\nDescribes how to install a Remote Desktop Web Connection.\r\nResources on a Remote Desktop Session Host Server\r\nMultiple users can log on simultaneously to a single RD Session Host server, sharing the hardware and\r\nsoftware resources of the server.\r\nWhat's New in Remote Desktop Services\r\nTopics that describe the changes in each release of the Remote Desktop Services API.\r\nConnect to another computer using Remote Desktop Connection\r\nSource: https://docs.microsoft.com/windows/win32/termserv/about-terminal-services\r\nhttps://docs.microsoft.com/windows/win32/termserv/about-terminal-services\r\nPage 2 of 2",
