"plain_text": "Prevent apps and windows from reopening on Mac - Apple\r\nSupport\r\nArchived: 2026-04-05 18:33:10 UTC\r\nWhen you shut down, restart, or log out of your Mac, you should see a confirmation dialog asking if you’re sure.\r\nDeselect the \"Reopen windows when logging back in” checkbox in that dialog.\r\nIf your Mac didn't show the confirmation dialog because it was forced to turn off or restart immediately, it uses the\r\nmost recent \"Reopen windows when logging back in\" setting when it starts up again. It does the same when you\r\nbypass the confirmation dialog by pressing and holding the Option key while choosing Log Out, Shut Down, or\r\nRestart from the Apple menu .\r\nYou can prevent apps from restoring the windows they had open when you last quit the app.\r\n1. From the Apple menu , choose System Settings.\r\n2. Click Desktop \u0026 Dock in the sidebar.\r\n3. Scroll down on the right and turn on \"Close windows when quitting an application.\"\r\n1. From the Apple menu , choose System Preferences.\r\n2. Click General.\r\n3. Select \"Close windows when quitting an app.\"\r\nPress and hold the Shift key while opening the app. This doesn't change any settings, but the app forgets\r\nany windows that were open the last time you quit the app.\r\nhttps://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204005\r\nPage 1 of 2\n\nStart up in safe mode, then restart normally. This doesn't change any settings, but your Mac forgets any\r\napps and windows that were open the last time you logged out or restarted.\r\nCheck the app's settings. Some apps offer a setting to make them reopen each time you log in to your Mac,\r\nor a setting to make them reopen their windows each time you open the app. For example, Safari has a\r\nsetting to control which windows it opens with.\r\nMake sure that the app isn't a login item. Login items open every time you log in to your Mac. You can add\r\nor remove login items. If the app isn’t a login item but still keeps opening when you log in, it might have\r\ninstalled other software to cause this behavior. Check the app’s documentation or contact the app\r\ndeveloper.\r\nPublished Date: December 08, 2025\r\nSource: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204005\r\nhttps://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204005\r\nPage 2 of 2",
